Hong Kong Hot Pot (香港熱鍋) Bangsar

One of the best times to enjoy hot pot is during rainy days since freshly cooked food from the hot pot provides a steady stream of soul-comforting warmth. I have always wanted to try the Hong Kong Hot Pot (香港熱鍋) located at Telawi Square since it opened last year. Since it has been pouring with rain recently especially in the evening, we decided to have our dinner here.
Environment - The place is not huge but the overall ambience of the restaurant is cosy.
The moment I stepped in the shop, it made me feel as though I’m in Hong Kong. If you are the fan of Alan Tam, you will find this place enjoyable as they play the retro music from Hong Kong singer. The entire ambiance is so Hong Kong!
When ordering nowadays can be made through ipad in most of the restaurants, I still think pencil and paper work better. Note that there is half portion available on the menu so that diners can enjoy a variety of dishes.
We ordered a pot of Mix Soup Base (Sakura Pork Bone Soup & Szchuan Spicy), a portion of Sakura Premium Pork Slices, half portion of HK Bean Curd Roll, Hand Made Chives Dumpling, HK Mushroom Pork Meat Ball, Fresh Made Prawn Meat Paste and Tong Hou veggie.
We planned to order the platter and Japanese Scallops, sadly the platter is no longer available while the scallop is out of stock.
Both the broths are very delicious and give you the original taste from Hong Kong although they are slightly on a higher price point. The Sakura pork bone soup is to die for, it tastes so good and I personally think that it tasted quite similar to Pork Tripe Pepper Soup where the other hot-pot places don’t have. On the other hand, the Szchuan Spicy soup is good too as the spices are not too spicy hot, but packed with flavours. The Mix Soup Base costs RM30. However, if you only want one soup, I recommend getting the Sakura Pork Bone Soup.
The condiments are highly recommended. The lady boss recommended us to mix 2 teaspoons of peanut sauce, 1 teaspoon of BBQ sauce (aka沙茶sauce from HK) and home blended chilli sauce based on personal liking. The pork slices go superbly delicious with the home-made dipping sauce!
Whenever I have pork for steamboat, it has to be thinly sliced. This Sakura Premim Pork Slices (RM25 - Full Portion) are so fresh, cooking this in the Szchuan Spicy is the way to go! I highly recommend this.
I loved the HK beancurd roll which is great to dip into the broths for max. of 5 secs. It melts into your mouth and the texture is so juicy and chewy as if you are eating fish maw. This beancurd roll is different from your regular beancurd roll as it is finer and less oily. You can even eat it as a snack without dipping into the broth.
The Chives Dumplings (RM 10 – ½ portion) are freshly made and they taste great too! The fillings consist of chives, meat and prawns. I find the price quite reasonable as there are five dumplings for ½ portion.
As for veggie, we ordered Tong Ou as it is always the steamboat favourite veggie. It costs RM8 for a portion. Vegetables at steamboat restaurants are always overpriced, so you just have to deal with it.
The Mushroom Pork Meat Ball (RM11 – ½ portion) is however too much for both of us. The size of the meat ball is huge, like a ping pong ball, so having two of it is more than enough for me.
Fresh Made Prawn Meat Paste should not be missed if you visit here. It reminds me of Hai Di Lao - The shrimp paste in the plastic funnel bag – woohoo!  We ordered ½ portion (RM12) to try for the first time and it turned out to be the HIGHLIGHT of the day. Not only is the paste fresh, the ingredients used was notably fresh too as the resulting prawn ball was crunchy and chewy. We will definitely order FULL PORTION on the next visit!
If processed food is not your preference in steamboat-ing, Hong Kong Hot Pot is simply the best place for you as most of their items are made from fresh ingredients, including prawn/fish balls and meat pastes which are made from fresh prawns and fish.
The relaxed Hong Kong ambiance of the restaurant is very popular with guests. Be sure to make a reservation before you go to avoid disappointment or long wait.
